BREAKING: The Kennedy family torches Trump for shutting down the Kennedy Center for two years for supposed “renovations” after major artists refused to preform for him.
This is absolutely humiliating for MAGA…
“Trump can take the Kennedy Center for himself. He can change the name, shut the doors, and demolish the building,” Jack Schlossberg, JFK’s grandson, wrote on X. “He can try to kill JFK. But JFK is kept alive by us now rising up to remove Donald Trump, bring him to justice, and restore the freedoms generations fought for.”
Over the weekend, Trump announced on Truth Social that the Kennedy Center (which he still ludicrously insists on calling the “Trump Kennedy Center”) will be closed for an “approximately two year period of time” so that it can achieve the “highest level of Success, Beauty, and Grandeur” through “Construction, Revitalization, and Complete Rebuilding.”
While it’s not surprising that Trump wants to make over the center to bring it into alignment with the tacky, gaudy, gilded, hideous aesthetic that he slaps on everything, the closure serves the more important purpose of mitigating embarrassment over the ongoing refusal by major artists to perform under his tenure.
A long string of prominent figures, ranging from Lin-Manuel Miranda to composer Phillip Glass, have pulled out of appearances at the Kennedy Center. Nobody with taste or a functioning moral compass wants to be associated with this administration. Rather than admit that they’re incapable of booking anyone worthwhile, Trump has decided to force the institution into a hiatus.
JFK’s niece Maria Shriver suggested as much—
“Translation: It has been brought to my attention that due to the name change (but nobody’s telling me it’s due to the name change), but it’s been brought to my attention that entertainers are canceling left and right, and I have determined that since the name change no one wants to perform there any longer,” she wrote on X in response to a screenshot of Trump’s Truth Social post. “I’ve determined that due to this change in schedule, it’s best for me to close this center down and rebuild a new center that will bear my name, which will surely get everybody to stop talking about the fact that everybody’s canceling… right?”
Former Congressman Joe Kennedy III, a grandson of RFK, also weighed in—
“President John F. Kennedy believed that one day this country would live up to its promise of justice and equal rights for all,” he wrote on X. “For those beliefs and for his sacrifice, Congress voted to make The Kennedy Center a living memorial to him, as a place built by the people for the people to celebrate what connects us.”
“While this trespass on the People’s will is painful, President Kennedy would remind us that it is not buildings that define the greatness of a nation. It is the actions of its people and its leaders,” he continued. “So, do not be distracted from what this Administration is actually trying to erase: our connection, our community, and our commitment to the rights of all.”
The encouraging truth here is that the American people and common decency will win in the end. The moment that Trump is out of power we’ll strike his name from everything that he’s tacked it onto. He’s grasping for a legacy that will blow away in the wind within a matter of years.
